Types of
Crib Mattresses Available: Foam or Innerspring
Foam – usually cheaper than innerspring in both
price and quality, they also weigh less. The denser the foam, the more quality,
firmness and support it offers babies.
Innerspring – better quality and heavier than
foam, they also keep their shape longer; however, they are usually more
expensive. The larger the number of springs or coils, the firmer the mattress.
When looking for
cribs, make sure they have sturdy mattress supports. Metal
supports are better than wood when babies grow older and become more active.
Mattress height should be adjustable, the older the child the lower the
position in the crib.
To ensure your baby’s
safety in the
crib, be sure the mattress fits properly with no more than 2 finger-widths
between the crib sides and the mattress. Check it on a regular basis and
replace immediately if any areas are soft or worn down. Ensure the replacement
is the same size as the old one.
